Athenkosi Kwinana

Athenkosi Kwinana, is a South African artist and visual activist based in Johannesburg, whose work centres on reimagining how people with albinism are represented in African visual culture. Working with drawing and printmaking, she creates large-scale self-portraits that confront stereotypes and challenge the discrimination she has faced throughout her life. Influenced by personal experience, her work explores identity, visibility, and the body, particularly within Black communities. Kwinana’s art is both a form of self-reflection and public advocacy, addressing the myths and isolation that people with albinism often endure. Through her practice, she uses art as a tool for education, healing, and social change, creating space for more inclusive and empathetic narratives.
