Tate Modern, Bankside, London SE1 9TG, UK

About the event

Set against the backdrop of independence from British colonial rule in 1960, the exhibition traces artistic networks spanning Zaria, Ibadan, Lagos, Enugu, and international centres such as London and Paris. Groups like the Zaria Art Society and Mbari Artists’ and Writers’ Club fused Nigerian, African, and European traditions to create bold, multidimensional works.

Featuring over 50 artists including Uzo Egonu, El Anatsui, Ladi Kwali, and Ben Enwonwu MBE, the exhibition offers a rich panorama of innovation, exchange, and cultural assertion. Nigerian Modernism highlights how these artists redefined modern art while shaping new visual languages rooted in local and global experience.
