January Spotlights: Alanis Forde, Naledi Tshegofatso Modupi, and Adjei Tawiah

As we enter the new year, our January spotlights showcase the creative talents of three exceptional individuals: Alanis Forde, Naledi Tshegofatso Modupi, and Adjei Tawiah. Each artist, coming from diverse backgrounds, contributes a unique perspective and skill set to contemporary art, enhancing our visual experience with their distinctive creations.

Portraits Beyond Paradise

Alanis Forde, a contemporary Barbadian artist, immerses us in the world of expressionistic realism portraiture. Her works, primarily rendered in oil paint and collage, invite us to navigate the intricacies of the black female identity against the backdrop of an idealised Caribbean paradise. Through vibrant and thought-provoking canvases, Forde challenges preconceived notions, shedding light on the contrast between tourist fantasies and the lived realities of local residents.

Collages of Heritage and Timeless Narratives

Gherdai Hassell, a Bermudian-born artist based in Manchester, takes us on a journey through the realms of memory and nostalgia. Her multidisciplinary approach, centred around collage, intricately weaves together histories and transformations passed down through family lineages. Hassell's exploration of identity, framed by the metaphor of the onion, becomes a profound commentary on the complex interplay of cultural symbols, shaping a narrative that spans past, present, and future.

Visionary Portraits with Nylon Sponge

Adjei Tawiah, a visionary Ghanaian artist, employs a unique medium – nylon sponge – to craft vibrant and figurative masterpieces. His innovative "sponge martial" technique elegantly clothes powerful subjects, creating delicately textured portraits across various mixed media. Tawiah's recent works celebrate camaraderie, friendship, family, and notable public figures, offering a visually stunning narrative that resonates profoundly in a time where human connection is paramount.

Alanis Forde, Gherdai Hassell, and Adjei Tawiah bring something special to the canvas. Each artist has a unique style and story, from Forde's Caribbean reflections to Hassell's Afrofuturist collages and Tawiah's vibrant celebrations of connection. Stay tuned for our February monthly spotlight, where we'll continue to explore and celebrate the captivating world of contemporary art.
