For Nigerian painter Jayeola Joshua, art has always been about more than just talent, it’s about resilience, vision, and what he calls “the audacity to dream.”
In this conversation with THE.CCART, Joshua reflects on his beginnings sketching on the back of calendars, his studies at Yaba College of Technology, and the moments of doubt and determination that continue to shape his practice today.
From Calendar Sketches to Formal Training
Joshua’s love for creating began early. As a child, he would draw at the back of calendars, making the most of limited resources. Over time, his curiosity grew into something more serious. He pursued an ND in art, exploring sculpture, ceramics, textiles, and painting before continuing his studies at Yaba College of Technology, where he majored in painting.
Alongside commissions in black-and-white portraits, his academic training exposed him to a broader understanding of what art could be, giving him both technical discipline and creative direction.
Moments That Shaped His Path
Joshua credits his time at Yaba College as a turning point. The emphasis on sketching laid a foundation that still guides his work, while visiting artists offered mentorship that helped him develop his own voice.
“One of my mentors always told me, ‘Joshua, don’t follow the crowd.’ That advice has stuck with me.”
Staying Committed Through Challenges
Behind his dedication lies a mix of personal drive and circumstance. Coming from a modest background, Joshua did not always have financial support, but that reality became fuel for his commitment.
“My goals, my aspirations, and my family keep me going. Even without much, I know I have to keep creating.”
Style, Process, and Symbolism
Joshua’s work draws on personal experience, cultural values, and self-identity. A recurring element is his use of red, which he describes as symbolising passion, determination, and power. His process is research-driven. He begins with sketches, transfers ideas onto canvas, and refines them through layers of paint. For him, inspiration is not something to wait for, it is something to act on.
“I don’t wait for inspiration. I have to do what has to be done.”
Artworks with Meaning
Among his works, Jacob’s Blessing holds special significance. Created during a low point in his journey, the piece depicts the biblical wrestling between Jacob and an angel.
“It came at my lowest, so I gave it everything I had. That work means a lot to me.”
Advice for Aspiring Artists
Joshua is candid about the challenges of being an artist, from self-doubt to financial struggles, but his advice is clear:
“Don’t wait for the perfect time to start. Just have the audacity to dream big, and believe in yourself so strongly that people might even think you’re crazy. That audacity will carry you forward.”
