This July, we're excited to spotlight three incredible artists whose work is as diverse and vibrant as their backgrounds. Meet Oluwole Omofemi, Cydne Jasmin Coleby, and Victor Morawo—each bringing their unique perspectives to the art world and sparking conversations about identity, heritage, and self-expression.

Championing African Heritage and Identity Through Art

Oluwole Omofemi, a Nigerian artist from Edo South, vividly captures the essence of African identity and heritage in his compelling paintings. Omofemi's work incorporates Afro hairstyles, baldness, and tribal markings, celebrating both femininity and the rich tapestry of African culture. Deeply influenced by the civil rights movement and its emphasis on Black pride, he delves into both historical and contemporary issues affecting African culture. His art, marked by Afrocentric elements and a pop art palette, preserves and honours African traditions. Omofemi’s distinctive use of colour and dynamic expressions challenge conventional notions of beauty and identity, urging viewers to embrace and celebrate African heritage.

Celebrating Caribbean Complexity Through Mixed Media

Cydne Jasmin Coleby, a Bahamian artist from Nassau, offers a profound exploration of the Caribbean experience, with a particular focus on her Bahamian roots. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant aesthetics of Junkanoo, Coleby creates striking artworks that pay tribute to the resilience of her community. Employing photographic archives and collage techniques, she blends paradisiacal imagery with elements of pain and trauma. Through the use of acrylics, decorative papers, glitter, and sand, Coleby’s art highlights the complex duality of paradise, encapsulating both its beauty and its underlying struggles. Her work fosters a deeper understanding of individual and collective identities, providing a nuanced commentary on the Caribbean experience.

Exploring Self-Acceptance and Body Positivity in Contemporary Art

Victor Morawo, a Nigerian-born artist from Oyo State, addresses social issues related to those who are perceived as different from societal norms. His paintings delve into themes of self-acceptance and body positivity, challenging viewers to reconsider traditional perceptions of beauty and identity. With a unique style that blends contemporary techniques and vibrant expressions, Morawo’s art conveys powerful messages about embracing diversity and fostering an inclusive society.

Oluwole Omofemi, Cydne Jasmin Coleby, and Victor Morawo art serves as a portal for exploring identity, heritage, and the interconnectedness of our world. This July, let us immerse ourselves in the beauty and depth of their creations, finding inspiration and insight in their remarkable works.
