April Spotlight Artists: Leykun Girma, Teddy Mulundi, and Damilola Samuel Ajegbomogun

This April, THE.CCART spotlights three artists whose work reflects movement, reflection, and the shifting nature of everyday experience. Leykun Girma, Teddy Mulundi, and Damilola Samuel Ajegbomogun each approach painting as a way of observing and translating the world around them, whether through spiritual symbolism, the rhythm of city life, or the tension between emotion and form. Together, their practices sit between observation and interpretation, capturing moments that feel both immediate and reflective.

Leykun Girma: Between Tradition and Inner Reflection

Leykun Girma is an Ethiopian artist whose work explores identity, spirituality, and the human condition through a symbolic and figurative approach. With over two decades of practice, his paintings draw from cultural traditions, belief systems, and everyday life in Ethiopia. Working primarily with acrylic, Girma uses the human figure as a space to reflect both physical presence and inner experience. His compositions are often layered with symbolic elements influenced by ancient visual and spiritual systems, creating a quiet dialogue between past and present. Through his work, Girma reflects on memory, endurance, and transformation, inviting viewers into a space of contemplation and shared understanding.

Teddy Mulundi: Painting Movement in Everyday Life

Teddy Mulundi is a Kenyan artist based in Nairobi whose work captures the rhythm and energy of daily life. Influenced by the constant motion of the city, his paintings draw from ordinary moments, turning them into expressive visual narratives. Working primarily with acrylic and a palette knife, Mulundi builds textured, layered surfaces that carry a strong sense of movement and depth. His compositions reflect an interest in people, culture, and the atmosphere of urban life, translating fleeting scenes into works that feel immediate and alive. Through his process, Mulundi creates paintings rooted in observation while celebrating the vibrancy of his surroundings.

Damilola Samuel Ajegbomogun: Holding Tension and Change

Damilola Samuel Ajegbomogun is a Nigerian artist whose work explores duality, emotion, and the shifting nature of human experience. Working primarily with oil on canvas, he uses colour, texture, and expressive brushwork to navigate the space between opposites, from silence and expression to creation and erasure. His practice reflects an ongoing search for meaning, where each painting becomes a space for reflection rather than resolution. Sitting between abstraction and figuration, his work captures moments of tension, transition, and becoming. Through this balance of instinct and intention, Ajegbomogun creates paintings that remain open, allowing viewers to connect through their own interpretations and emotional responses.

This April, explore the work of Leykun Girma, Teddy Mulundi, and Damilola Samuel Ajegbomogun. Through texture, symbolism, and movement, their paintings offer different ways of seeing, inviting us to slow down, observe, and reflect on the moments that shape everyday life.
