In celebration of International Women's Day this month, we're putting the spotlight on Kimathi Mafafo, Alicia-Pearl, and Sophia Oshodin. These remarkable women, each contributing their unique flair, sharing their unique stories to the art world.





Challenging Stereotypes Through Lush Imagery


Kimathi Mafafo, a South African artist proficient in embroidery, oil painting, and installation, takes on the challenge of debunking historical stereotypes about gender inequality in Africa. With a primary focus on celebrating the Black female and depicting abstracted forms, Mafafo's works often feature lush, verdant imagery—a stark contrast to her upbringing in the dusty mining town of Kimberly in the Northern Cape. Through her art, she challenges preconceived notions and offers a fresh perspective on the strength and resilience of black women, using nature-inspired visuals to convey a sense of empowerment and beauty.






Celebrating Identity Through Art


Alicia-Pearl, a Zimbabwean-born artist, utilises her craft to explore and celebrate her identity. Through textiles, text-based art, and portraiture, she fearlessly addresses societal issues, presenting controversial statements that ignite conversations about race. Her series, 'Childhood•Upbringing•Identity•Belonging,' delves into personal memories, prompting viewers to ponder the profound impact of events and the nuanced nature of identity. Additionally, Alicia-Pearl's focus on black culture and music adds a dynamic layer to her artistic expression, offering a unique perspective on the richness and diversity of Blackness.






Exploring the Allure of Everyday Life


Sophia Oshodin, a London-based Nigerian artist, is a self-taught figurative painter self-taught figurative painter, captures the essence of everyday life in her captivating oil and acrylic works. Her imaginative figures set against ordinary backdrops transcend the mundane, challenging stereotypes and addressing the complexities of mental health. Oshodin's art fosters a vibrant emotional connection, inviting viewers to interpret their own dialogue on culture and perception within the shared human experience. With each stroke of the brush, she weaves a colourful tapestry that encourages introspection and celebration of the ordinary as extraordinary.
